Motor sport in India couldn't have had a better year than in 2011. With the big ticket item, Formula 1, bringing limelight to the nation, ably supported by Narain Kathikeyan and Sahara Force India, we should be poised for better days to come.
But the reality is far from encouraging. From what I can see, there seems to be no program in place to further the sport.
1x1 polls
Right from the Government that is playing dog in the manger (seems that they have developed an aversion to the word 'fast'), to the owners of the only F1 circuit BIC, who's commercial interests override those of National motor sport, and similarly that of the Indian racing league there seems to be no organisation that has any racing DNA to play catalyst.
While the Ministry of Youth and Sports has gone into its shell for obvious reasons , the Gaurs , owners of the F1 property , not forthcoming as to how they intend using a top class facility to good use for the betterment of local talent and the Indian league (indefinitely postponed ) offering to pay the Indian drivers a mere pittance . It doesn't look like anyone out there really cares about developing Indian drivers worthy of international competition.
Firstly, there are is no one to turn to for even a basic understanding of competitive driving. Many young lads do not even possess fundamentals such as 'brake and shift in a straight line'.
Racing schools need to be established asap! Ex-racing drivers can be sent to the UK to learn how to teach! These schools need not be cheap as one would need funds to maintain requisite equipment such as simulators and high quality racing machines apart from paying the racing coach an adequate salary to keep his interest alive in the long run.
